Cleeve Hill, Nutterswood, Queen's Wood, Cleeve Common and Postlip

A hilly walk along the western edge of Cleeve Hill, across Cleeve Common down to Postlip and back via Cleeve Hill Golf Club and the hillside above Woodmancote and Bishop's Cleeve.

  • Description:
  • The walk is hilly in several places with two steepish climbs and descents. The paths can be a little indistinct in the woods on the western edge of the Cleeve Hill and across Cleeve Common. If the ground is wet the descents in the woods and towards Woodmancote may need care.

The Rising Sun .

Start from the Rising Sun, Cleeve Hill, grid reference SO 9806 2666. PDF of the walk and/or Google Earth Track of the walk.

Leave the Rising Sun car park into Rising Sun Lane (see photograph) and head east up hill to cross the cattle grid onto the Cotswold Way on the western side of Cleeve Hill.

Turn right and head south along the Cotswold Way (which uses a tarmac access road to a small group of houses below Cleeve Cloud) to where the a path leaves the Cotswold Way to descend west into Nutterswood. The photograph looks along to Cleeve Cloud from the Cotswold Way.

3 SO 9824 2570 720 yards

Head west and south west descending through Nutterswood then bear south between Nutterswood and Queen's Wood to reach a path running east to west through Queen's Wood.

  • Turn right off the Cotswold Way and descend west the south west through rough grass and low bushes to reach a stile into Nutterswood at SO 9813 2562.
  • Descend south west through Nutterswood. The path may can be a little indistinct and can be slippery at times. Leave the wood via a stile (or via the path round the stile) at SO 9798 2543.
  • Bear left head south broadly level across scrubby land between Nutterswood and Queen's Wood to enter the wood via a stile at SO 9800 2521. The photograph shows the view west from along here.
  • Continue south for a short way to reach a path running east west through Queen's Wood.

Turn right and descend west and north west through Queen's Wood to leave the wood via a stile at SO 9776 2530. The descent can be slippery at times. The photograph shows the path descending through the woods.

Head south along the western edge of Queen's Wood to where a path goes over a stile and up hill along the southern edge of Queen's Wood heading east climbing quite steeply back towards Cleeve Common.

  • Turn left and head south west descending gently along the western edge of Queen's Wood, then bearing south and continuing broadly level.
  • At SO 9772 2497 climb over a stile (see photograph) and continue on the level south to where a path heads off over a stile north, north east, climbing steeply along the southern edge of Queen's Wood towards Cleeve Common.
6 SO 9779 2467 1,355 yards

Climb steeply north, north east along the southern edge of Queen's Wood bearing north at the top of the climb to the gate giving access to Cleeve Common.

  • Cross the stile and climb steeply north, north east along the southern edge of Queen's Wood to cross a stile going through the edge of the wood at SO 9830 2483.
  • Continue climbing and cross another stile at SO 9835 2485 back into open land at the edge of the wood.
  • Continue to climb over another stile at SO 9849 2497. The photograph shows some interested residents at the time I did the walk.
  • Continue climbing to cross another stile at SO 9865 2501 into a small wooded area.
  • At SO 9867 2501 climb over another stile and climb steeply to reach a track running north west to south east up to Cleeve Common.
  • Turn left and climb fairly gently up the gate onto Cleeve Common.
7 SO 9872 2519 1,850 yards

Through the gate and head north east over the top of Cleeve Common then descending through old quarry workings to a stile in a broken down wall leading to Postlip Hall.

  • Through the gate bear right and head north east gently climbing towards past the high point of Cleeve Common on the left then gently descending to cross the broad access track running south east to north west across the common at SO 9902 2571.
  • Continue descending gently north east across the Common to where the path starts to descend quite steeply through old quarry workings at SO 9943 2638.
  • Descend carefully through the old quarry workings, (see photograph) the path may be slippery at times to reach a stile crossing a broken down wall, the path on the other side leading to Postlip Hall.
8 SO 9953 2659 860 yards

Descend north east to the western edge of Postlip Hall, then bear north along the wall, then climb north east and north to a metal gate and track heading west towards Cleeve Hill.

  • Cross the stile and descend gently north east to a stile at SO 9975 2669 followed after a few more yards by a stile into a track by the wall running around Postlip Hall grounds.
  • Bear left and keeping the wall on your right head north through two metal gates (the photograph looks backward throght the gates) to reach a wooden gate at SO 9981 2695.
  • Climb north east along a rough track then bear north to reach a metal gate with a track beyond heading west towards Cleeve Hill.

Head west, climbing gently at first past the first hole of Cleeve Hill Golf Course to reach the cattle grid at the end of the access lane to Cleeve Hill.

  • Go through the gate and head south descending gently with the field perimeter on your left.
  • Through the gate, head west along the track gently climbing to reach a metal gate at SO 9950 2726.
  • Continue west levelling out past the first hole of Cleeve Hill Golf Course to reach the cattle grid at the end of the access lane to Cleeve Hill (see photograph).
10 SO 9889 2718 510 yards

Head north down the access lane to Cleeve Hill (see photograph) to the B4632 then south west along the B4632 to where a path descends westwards towards Woodmancote.

11 SO 9883 2739 1,110 yards

Descend westwards across fields towards Woodmancote, then turn south across a valley to reach Stockwell Lane.

  • Cross the stone stile heading west over the wall and descend the steps which can be very slippery in damp weather, then cross the wooden stile shortly after.
  • Continue to descend westwards to cross a wooden stile at SO 9863 2747.
  • Bear a little towards the south west and continue to descend and cross another stile at SO 9850 2746.
  • Continue west across another stile at SO 9840 2747 followed by another at SO 9828 2746.
  • At SO 9815 2744 turn left onto a path heading south which descends to cross a small stream. The photograph looks across the small valley.
  • At SO 9817 2726 climb over a stile and continue south gently climbing to Stockwell Lane.
12 SO 9815 2718 1,020 yards

Go west along Stockwell Lane then take a path heading south west broadly level before turning left to head south east climbing steeply back to the Rising Sun.

  • Turn right onto Stockwell Lane and descend gently west to take the track/path on the left continuing west at SO 9804 2715.
  • As the track turns to head south west go through a metal gate and continue onto a path to a metal gate at SO 9795 2710.
  • Continue south west, broadly level to a wooden gate at SO 9785 2695.
  • Continue level south west, then at SO 9777 2685 turn left to head south east climbing steeply up towards the main road and Rising Sun.
  • At SO 9801 2665 climb over a stile onto the B4632 (see photograph), cross the road into Rising Sun Lane and climb the lane back to the car park of the Rising Sun.
